More Mochi Please

I have to say, last week I had an amazing night. My wife let me have an outing with some good pals and here’s pretty much the summary of the night:

- Took part in some playground basketball where we ended up notching an unlikely victory against some playground regulars (to give you an idea of how ill-prepared we were for competitive play—this image captures what kind of game we brought to the courts)

Not the most intimidating bunch on the courts.

- Celebrated our victory with some NY pizza, chased down by some Stewart soda (three words for you: Key Lime flavor).

- Than to ice the night, sat atop on a rooftop enjoying the company of friends, good conversation and authentic hand-rolled cigars from Nicaragua. Now onto some thoughts …

  • I really want to see the movie WALL-E. Everyone who has seen the film raves about it. Besides the great reviews about the film itself, I’m just a huge admirer of Pixar and the quality of their work. I’ve never been let down yet, and I can’t imagine WALL-E not living up to its hype.
  • In the music world, I really want to get the new Sigur Ros album. As one of my friends described the album, “It’s epic.”
  • I have a huge fear of enclosed spaces. I think the general public calls this claustrophobia. Personally, I think if you don’t fear enclosed spaces that should be the illness. There’s nothing natural about being in tight, oxygen-sucking areas of space. Only reason I bring this up is that I was stuck in an elevator last week going to the top floor of a building. When the elevator finally brought me back to the security guard/doorman working the lobby floor, I was like, “What happened, I was stuck in that elevator for like 10 minutes?” His response, “Sorry for the delay, but I can assure you, you were only in there for about 30 seconds.” Did I mention, I hate enclosed spaces?
  • Sometimes I find myself lucky to be around some gifted people. A friend of mine Liem, co-founded an organization called The Blind Project, which brings awareness to the child trafficking taking place. The website is beautifully done, please check it out.
  • Saw an article about the show Cash Cab on the WSJ.com the other day (maybe registration required). If you haven’t heard by now, I was on Cash Cab with a couple friends … and no, I don’t have any of our winnings left over. It went toward amazing flowers that I got my wife … okay, I just lied. Here’s the video in case you never saw it.
  • You know what’s worse than sitting on your office chair for 3 hours straight without moving? Sitting 3 hours without moving on my office chair with a wedgie. Seriously, this is the last time I buy khakis from Old Navy.
  • This might put a little damper on any future road trips.
  • Celebrity sighting of the week: Lance Bass. I was on my way to Brooklyn for a good friend’s engagement/housewarming party, and for a minute I couldn’t put a name to the face. It wasn’t until I whispered to two girls standing next to me on the subway, “Hey, remember ‘N Sync. Who’s that guy?” Before you knew it, they were simultaneously hyperventilating while taking photos with their phones. A couple years back at my buddy’s bachelor party in Orlando, we ended up chilling with Chris Kirkpatrick, which means I’m just three ‘N Sync members away from becoming an official stalker.
  • In an effort to lose weight, I decided one day to eat really small portions, which led to me almost fainting out of sheer hunger … which led to me getting a large helping of fro-yo (Red Mango was the choice) with three toppings. Here’s my dialogue with the lady behind the counter:

“What do you want?” she asked.
“Strawberry, mochi … and mochi…” I said, trailing off at the end.
The lady corrects me with, “You already said mochi for your second topping, what do you want for your third?”
“Um, more mochi please,” I state.
“Wait, you want mochi for your second topping and mochi for your third topping?”
“Yes. More mochi, please.”

\
Mmm, mochi.”

Welcome to the world of Wonki …

This is my official first blog on a WordPress platform. I left Xanga just because no matter how hard I tried, I felt like I was loitering in a college scene. In any case, I felt like I needed to start anew, create new blogrolls (good name for a sushi dish by the way) and just start writing all the time. Check often as I plan to write often, and if you feel up to it, comment often. I get a kick out of thinking that someone will expend that extra energy to respond to Wonki (and yes, I will go third person on you). Now to the thoughts …

· How did Ansel Adams become the photographer of choice for corporate offices? I guess HR folks thought that pictures of the Grand Canyon in black-and-white may help alleviate the claustrophobic feeling that accompanies being stuck in a dead-end job. Hold on, let me check that theory … yup, helps a little.

· I wish I had the skills to illustrate or design websites, which leads me to this honest question: Can I continue to have “proficient in HTML” on my resume when by proficiency I mean I understand the importance of the “<>” button?

· We’re entering another lull in the sports world, which means I can spend that much more time with my family. Which reminds me, how cute is my second son?

· I ordered a jumbo-sized cup of ice coffee from one of those coffee corner carts today. I never do that, but I didn’t feel like spending $4 at Starbucks. How was the coffee you ask? Let’s just say, I’m budgeting out $4 for tomorrow.

· I also blog on SavvyDaddy.com. It’s really only relevant to you if you’re a dad or about to be a dad. And if you think this is a shameless plug, well, you know me too well.

· Coldplay’s new album is awesome. I know that they’ve been getting split reviews about their latest release, but if you like The Arcade Fire and Brian Eno’s ability to create lush, sonic-driven songs … there you go.

· Do you twitter? I joined twitter because I like to be up-to-date with all the new social networking platforms, but I have one problem with twitter:

o I end up sitting idly for a few minutes thinking of something pithy and poignant to type into the blank bar. If anything, my twitter should always read: “…thinking of something clever to say.”

· LaCoste has the gator, Le Tigre has the tiger, Polo has the horse, Abercrombie has the moose, Brooks Brothers has a hanging pig-a-mathing and Penguin has the penguin (obviously). Apparently, animals are what make logos memorable. If you were to design a clothing label, what animal would you choose? I mean, a rat wouldn’t do well and picking a sloth would be kind of deflating to your image, right? Everyone loves pandas, so that would be a guaranteed success, as would polar bears. I have a feeling a platypus logo would do really well. This is the kind of stuff I think about during my workday. Medication can only help so much.
